RECA Downwinder Archival Support

As of July 2025, Idahoans who developed certain cancers due to exposure to radiation from the U.S. nuclear weapons program (Downwinders) and their survivors are eligible for a one-time lump sum payment of $100,000 in compensation through the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA).

As part of their application, claimants will require documentation that proves presence in the state of Idaho for one of the following durations:

• 1 year between January 21, 1951, and November 6, 1962; or

• The entire period from June 30, 1962, to July 31, 1962​

 

Archival records are free and open to the public for general use, and staff can create certified copies for those who do not live locally. There are two ways that we can support those filing claims:

1. If you plan to file through the online portal, scans of archival material will be sent by email along with a cover letter certifying the validity of those scans.

2. If you plan to file by mail, scans of archival material will be sent by email and a cover letter with an ink signature will be sent by mail. 

 

Due to the number of RECA archival support requests, please allow our office 4-6 weeks to process your request. When staff has completed your request or if they have questions, LCHS staff will contact you.
